🌿 Gladys & Ethel’s

St George’s Road has a charming new resident that’s equal parts lush plant sanctuary, coffee hideaway, and curated gift shop. It’s a heartfelt tribute to owner Stuart’s grandmothers: Gladys, who taught him to bake, and Ethel, who sparked his green thumb. Since Stuart also runs The Artisan Cakery just down the road, you can bet the cakes here are top-tier, plus, they’re all gluten-free, including their bread.

The shop has been a hit since its grand opening just last weekend, stocking everything from trailing African Violets and Xanthosoma Mint to cards by Ornament Art. It’s already cemented itself as one of those dangerous spots where you pop in for a quick flat white and emerge with a box of chocolate eggs and a gift for yourself you never knew you needed. Keep an eye on this spot; Stuart has plenty more planned for the year ahead, and it’s already blending in as a Kemptown staple.

🌮 Casazul

If you’re wandering through the Open Market and catch a scent of smoky chillies and slow-cooked pork, just follow your nose to Unit 45. Casazul has been a staple here since 2019, and owner Gabriel is famous for serving up some of the most authentic Mexican flavours in the city with a massive smile. It’s a family-run, zero-waste operation that proves you don’t need a fancy sit-down setting to produce world-class food. The vibe is fast, friendly, and properly vibrant, perfect for a quick market lunch with the best Tacos in town.

The menu is very vegan-friendly, with a mirror option for every meat option, meaning every meat dish has a dedicated vegan twin, so you’ll never feel like your missing out. Their Chicken Mole is a masterpiece made with over 40 ingredients (including nuts and bitter chocolate, the key ingredient of Mole), but the vegan Cauliflower Mole is just as complex and delicious. If you’re into heat, try the Beef Colorado or the Oyster Mushroom version, both smothered in a roasted chilli sauce that’ll stay with you. Prices are a total steal at around £12 for three loaded tacos, and you can even grab a refreshing hibiscus Jamaica or a creamy Horchata to wash it all down.

Plus, if you can’t make it to the market, you can actually bring the Casazul magic into your own kitchen with their DIY taco kits, delivered across the city. They sell everything from 1kg bags of nixtamalized corn tortillas to their signature slow-cooked fillings and fiery Salsa Macha online. It’s the foodie’s dream Friday night in, especially since their ‘Cochinita Pibil’ kits come with all the pickled onions and black beans you need to look like a pro. Whether you’re eating at the market window or at your coffee table, it’s easily some of the best value, high-quality cooking in Brighton.
