šļø Ā£50m Hove housing scheme gets green light - but costs rise by Ā£2.6m
A Ā£50 million plan to build more than 300 new flats on the former Sackville Road Trading Estate in Hove has been approved ā but the projectās cost has already ballooned by an extra Ā£2.6 million. Brighton and Hove City Councilās cabinet will discuss the funding increase next week, with officials citing design changes, delays securing the site, and new safety regulations as reasons for the rise. The Homes for Brighton and Hove scheme, a joint venture between the council and Hyde Housing, includes 183 flats for social rent and 123 for shared ownership.
Councillors backed the plans unanimously, calling the development a much-needed boost for affordable housing in the city, though several raised concerns about its design, lack of parking, and strain on local infrastructure. Independent councillor Samer Bagaeen warned that āresponsible development must be matched by adequate infrastructure,ā citing worries about traffic, utilities, and healthcare access. Others criticised the block-style design, lack of green space, and the absence of a GP surgery on-site.
Despite criticism, Hyde Housingās regional development director Sarah Poulter said the project would offer ātruly affordableā homes to people on the cityās long waiting list, noting 5,000 live applications and over 2,000 households in temporary accommodation. Construction is expected to take up to a year to gain Building Safety Regulator approval, with the final go-ahead set to be decided at the councilās cabinet meeting next Thursday (14 November).

š” Brighton Palace Pier owners consider selling up
The Brighton Pier Group has revealed it may sell the iconic Brighton Palace Pier following a sharp decline in profits. The company said trading in 2025 āremained subdued,ā with like-for-like sales down 10% year-on-year and rising costs from the National Living Wage and reduced business rate relief adding pressure.
A spokesperson said the potential sale of āsome or allā of the groupās assets was now being explored as āthe most effective course of actionā to preserve value for stakeholders. The group has already sold off several London and Bristol bars and is marketing its Lightwater Valley theme park in North Yorkshire for Ā£3 million.

š Councillor warns of āaccident waiting to happenā in Mile Oak
A Portslade councillor has warned itās āonly a matter of timeā before a serious crash occurs at the corner of Heathfield Drive and Graham Avenue, where a busy bus stop blocks driversā views. Independent councillor Peter Atkinson said up to four buses often queue outside the shops, forcing motorists to inch dangerously into traffic with no clear line of sight.
The councilās road safety team previously said little could be done, but Atkinson is pushing again for action and urging residents to send photos and videos of the problem. He praised the bus companyās ādependable and very frequent serviceā but said urgent steps, such as installing an anti-glare mirror, are needed before tragedy strikes.

š Wildlife Trust wins Brighton Marina dredging case
The Sussex Wildlife Trust has won its legal challenge to stop dredging material from Brighton Marina being dumped in the Beachy Head West Marine Conservation Zone. The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) admitted it hadnāt properly assessed whether the project would āavoid, minimise or mitigateā environmental harm and chose not to defend the case in court.
Conservation director Henri Brocklebank said the plan would have meant a million tonnes of sediment, ā33,000 shipping containers worth of spoilā, being dumped in one of the UKās rarest habitats. The MMO now has to find an alternative disposal site, while keeping the marina safely navigable for boats.

Last weekās trivia had you scratching your heads over Brightonās silver-screen cameos, and it turns out nearly half of you were caught in a dream! Inception (2010) was the correct answer, with 47.2% of you guessing right. The 2nd most popular pick, Everything Everywhere All At Once, actually features a shot of the West Pier, with the characters standing on the beach, a tiny moment that inspired the question in the first place after seeing the film last week.
Ready for another round? Hereās this weekās Xmas themed question inspired by the lights being switched on later this week:
What colour was Father Christmas most often shown wearing before red became the norm?Father Christmas hasnāt always looked the way he does today. In fact, his outfit has changed a lot over the centuries! |
