As a Hungarian in Brighton, finding an authentic taste of home is quite rare, which is why this spot is my absolute favourite sweet treat in town. Located in the centre of the city, it's run by a dear friend, Niki, who spent years building a loyal local following on the weekend market circuit before opening her permanent shop.

Niki owns and runs an impressive business and is also a dedicated mother, handling everything herself from preparing the sweet yeast dough to slow-roasting each chimney cake (Kürtőskalács) on specialised rotating grills. The outcome is perfection: a crispy, caramelised crust coated in cinnamon, sugar, or nuts, with a soft, fluffy interior. Her shop is even more unique because its entire menu is 100% plant-based, allowing everyone to enjoy this authentic Hungarian treat without compromise.

What I love most is seeing a hardworking, independent maker bring a genuine piece of my heritage to the North Laine through pure dedication and passion. Whether you're already obsessed with chimney cakes or trying your first one, head over to North Road and give one of our hardworking local independent makers the love she deserves.

🍺 The Blind Busker

If you are strolling down Church Road and want to soak up a bit of genuine local folklore, you have to pop into The Blind Busker. This classic spot is actually named after Blind Harry Vowles, a famous local character from the early 1900s who used to play his accordion down by the Angel of Peace statue. It brilliantly honours that town history while offering a wonderfully relaxed, old-school pub experience right in the heart of Hove.

Inside, it effortlessly blends traditional boozer charm with plenty of space to catch up with friends, test your trivia at their pub quiz, or settle in for live sport on the big screens. Outside, you are spoiled for choice with fantastic sun-trap seating at both the front and back, perfect for watching the world go by with a pint in hand. Behind the bar, they serve a cracking range of cask and craft ales, paired with a classic menu packed with hearty burgers, loaded jackets, and lunchtime deals. It is a reliable, warm, and thoroughly unwelcoming of pretence neighbourhood anchor that feels like a true Hove institution.
