📕 Papersmiths
A beautiful little shop in the Lanes and an ideal place to find a Christmas gift that isn’t the predictable bottle of whisky or the classic pack of socks. Papersmiths is the kind of shop you wander into on a North Laines stroll and inevitably walk out with something you didn’t know you needed, whether it is a coffee table book on nature and brutalist architecture, a guided journal for post-break-up clarity, or a stack of cards and stationery that feels too nice to give away. The shelves are curated with intention and everything has that satisfying mix of playful, thoughtful and well designed.

Papersmiths began life in Bristol when two graphic designers with five hundred quid and a love of paper goods turned half their studio into a tiny shop. Founder Sidonie Warren has since grown the brand into an online shop and two brick-and-mortar stores in Chelsea, London and of course, Britain’s most creative area, The Lanes. If you need 2026 diaries, guided journals, pocket notebooks, book bags or a pen you will actually enjoy using, this is the place.

🧙♀️ Thewitchez
Brighton is not short of unique businesses, but when you’re part café/restaurant, part design studio, part photography den, you are certainly unlike anywhere else in the city. Thewitchez blends homemade European comfort cooking with a cosy, candlelit atmosphere filled with art, trinkets and witchy charm, all run by a team of witches who clearly love what they do.
The menu is like a tour across mountains, forests and old family kitchens across Europe, all with bewitching names and descriptions. Starters like the warm pear Summer Breeze or the grilled Polish Tatra Mountains cheese set the tone before moving into hearty mains such as the Alpine-style Rösti, the folkloric Pierogi, flame-seared Lamblicious Steak, or a crisp Bavarian Schnitzel. Everything is cooked fresh and served slowly on purpose, rewarding anyone who enjoys a long, flavour-rich evening. Cocktails are a quiet highlight too, especially the apple pie cocktail, and they have a brilliant range of wines to pair with your dumplings or steak.

It’s the perfect spot for couples or small groups seeking something cosy, but it’s not for families, with the venue being adults only for an evening that’s relaxed, quirky and full of character. Expect about £35 to £45 per person for 2 courses, with plenty of gluten free and veggie options clearly marked. A proper Brighton gem for anyone wanting dinner that feels personal, homemade and a little bit magical.
